For small manual tasks, hosted frontier AI is currently easier for consumers to reach than capable local systems. The advantage starts with simple access, because people can direct powerful hosted models at modest jobs without first assembling a machine that can run a useful model at home.

Local capability carries a concrete hardware threshold. Even the cited Qwen setup calls for a decent GPU and roughly 32 GB of RAM, which turns private AI into a purchase decision before any task begins. Anthony compared that decision as around $5,000 for private-AI hardware versus about $20 a month for a hosted subscription. Those numbers aren’t verified market prices, but they capture the scale of the comparison being made.

Awareness may widen the gap further, since potential users aren’t necessarily aware that capable local options exist. Hosted intelligence is already easier for them to get their hands on, so it can absorb small jobs whose size would make a dedicated local machine difficult to justify. For consumers choosing how to handle those tasks, availability and the upfront hardware threshold reinforce each other, leaving hosted frontier systems as the more accessible route.
