Purpose-Built Robots Beat Humanoids at Home
The strongest case for household automation is a machine that reliably removes a defined chore, not a humanoid whose broad capabilities may never justify its cost.

Household automation already works through specialised machines. A dishwasher handles one recurring task, while a robotic vacuum handles another. A humanoid promises to cover the awkward jobs left between them, such as washing pots, putting away clothes or tidying up after a family. Yet Anthony’s rough estimate was that this might save about an hour a day, depending on the household, which leaves a substantial investment chasing a relatively modest gain.
Andy questioned whether that efficiency dividend could justify the capital required. Pete saw the humanoid form itself as part of the problem. The world may be built for human bodies, making a human-shaped robot adaptable, but products that claim to do anything can be difficult to value because their practical role isn’t clear. A purpose-built robot makes the trade-off easier to judge because its cost can be weighed against a specific job it performs repeatedly.
Cheaper manufacturing could strengthen that approach rather than make one universal machine inevitable. Pete suggested building the tool required for each task, potentially as a group of small machines that act like separate hands for a local AI agent. The intelligence could coordinate broadly while each physical device remains narrow, replaceable and easy to assess through the chore it actually completes.
